What Does It Mean?

This document contains a list of the programs, services, and assessments ongoing at MCES. These items may come up in conversation with your child or teacher, and appear in our newsletters, daily folders, or on our website. It is our hope this document will explain some of the educational language at MCES.

AIMS Web

AIMS Web is our Benchmark and Progress Monitoring Tool.  Each student is assessed 3 times a year and progress monitored as needed.

AR

  • AR is the abbreviation for Accelerated Reader
  • AR is a computer-based reading program that focuses on reading comprehension.
  • Students are computer tested to determine their reading level.
  • Students select a book to read independently and take a computerized comprehension test on the book consisting of 5 - 10 multiple-choice questions. The students earn points for correctly answered questions.
  • AR Goals - Each student has a goal to earn a certain number of points per nine weeks (determined by their teacher) and maintain an average score of 85% or above. The students may take tests during school hours with the permission of their teacher.
  • Rewards / Celebrations - Students that meet their goal will be recognized at a school-wide celebration at the end of each nine week grading period.

Common Core State Standards

  • Common Core State Standards have been adopted in 45 states.
  • The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.
  • The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
  • Common Core State Standards focus on students having a more in-depth understanding of material.
  • Your child will be completing "Math Tasks" which are word problems targeting real-life situations. The students will be asked to solve and provide an explanation for their answer (ex. drawings, graphs, manipulatives).

Counseling

  • Krista Litton is the guidance counselor at MCES.
  • Mrs. Litton is available for individual counseling daily and provides direct instruction in the classroom each week.
  • Guidance lessons include a wide variety of topics focused on providing students with the skills necessary to deal with daily life while developing good character.
  • Contact Mrs. Way by e-mail (krista.litton@hck12.net), send a note to the child's teacher, or call the office to leave a message.

Intervention / Enrichment / Walk to Learn / Connections

  • Students attend intervention or enrichment each day.  This time allows teachers to focus on specific reading and math skills.
