I received my BS degree in Elementary Education from ETSU in 1982. I then completed my Master's Degree in Education with an emphasis in Early Childhood at ETSU in 1989.
I have spent my entire teaching career at MCES. I taught third grade one year and have enjoyed 30 plus years with my kindergarten students. I have had the pleasure to teach several second generation "Sharks." I may be old but I'm not out! I have been the Title 1 coordinator at MCES for several years. We are fortunate to have federal funds to support our educational efforts.
I am a life-long resident of Hawkins County. I attended elementary school right here at MCES, although it was known as Liberty Hill School at the beginning of my school years. I am the single mother of 1 grown son and we live in Church Hill. He is known to my students as "Joseph Shanks" and your child will hear many Joseph adventures. Joseph is employed at Domtar Converting at the Ridgefields Plant. We enjoy traveling as often as possible. We have found a new love together - cruising. We try to sail away to new tropical desitations twice anually. Our unlitmate goal is to reach the "Platinum level" on Carnival cruise line. Joseph recently purchased a "vacation home" on Cherokee Lake and we spend every single moment there that we can. I basically unplug, sit on the deck, and watch the boats and jet skis go by. He can be found fishing at every opportunity. He is also the resident griller. Those hotdogs can't be beat! Our one extravagance is watching Cirque du Soleil live shows every chance we get. I am the pianist for 2 small Presbyterian churches. I proudly serve on the Mount Carmel city Library Board. The last three summers I assisted with the Carter's Valley Read to be Ready summer camp. I loved teaching and spending time with students from another school. Joseph and I have a golden doodle, Ebenezer. Your child will hear stories about him and Leroy, the cat too. Yes, I have taught children of students I had many years ago. Retirement is looming quickly in my future, but I still thoroughly enjoy teaching and watching children become successful students. Welcome to the "Tank!"
